Powder Bath Reveal: Moody, Dark, & Elegant

When we bought this house in 2022 it was so builder grade, and very basic. I knew there would be lots of projects I would want to tackle, and the powder room was the first. It was so boring, and had this large mirror that I just hated. The room is quite small, very long, and narrow. The mirror was all you saw when walking into the space, so I knew I wanted to remove it. It felt so much bigger instantly. I wanted to add bead board, for character and a fun wallpaper above to coordinate. I found this stunning Floral wallpaper from Artza Co. They’re a Canadian small business and I was so excited to find them. I knew I wanted this space to be moody, and warm, cue Townsend Harbor Brown. It is exactly what I hoped it would be. I actually think I am going to use it in my guest room too. It is so stunning. Has a slight purple/red undertone and so beautiful.

We started by taking off all the baseboards, and pulling back the vanity from the wall. I knew I wanted this space to look as professional as possible so removing the baseboards first was key. We then marked all our studs, and started appyling the bead board using our brad nailer. We didn’t use any adhesive, so if we ever want to remove the bead board, there won’t be much if any damage to the dry wall. I found this gorgeous chunky trim for the top of the bead board, and I just love the combo. Both were purchased here at Home Depot in Canada.

To finish off the bead board, we caulked all the seams, filled the nails holes and gave it a light sand for a nice smooth finish. I used a foam roller, and Aura Benjamin Moore paint in a flat finish. The flat finish gave the paint a very professional finish. I find dark paint colors are a little tougher and the flat finish gives the best result. I did two coats of paint, and really love how it turned out.

Now it was time for wallpaper. The wallpaper I used for this project was a peel & stick variety and I found it very easy to work with. When applying wallpaper, you want to start in a inconspicuous spot, and with a level line. As long as your first panel is perfectly level, the rest of the application should go smoothly, simply line up the seams and overlap according to the manufactures instructions. Doing the corners is the hardest part, and I watched a few youtube tutorials to perfect my application.

I added new hardware, new mirror and shelves above the toilet to finish off the space. The shelves above the toilet are so charming, and I love having a cute moment to style. I am so very in love with this space, and can’t wait to start my next project. I have a few in mind, and can’t wait to get started!
