Our Backsplash - Building 101

When we first started building our home, I had no idea that I would end up with brick as our backsplash. The original plan was white subway tile, but as the process went on I came across this beautiful kitchen on Instagram, and fell in love with her brick backsplash. I knew it was something we had to do.

I looked and looked for the right brick to achieve this look, and finally came across this brick from Home Depot. I loved the subtle color variation in these bricks.

What makes this look so unique, and brings in so much charm and character is the way the brick was finished. Our tile installer used a German Schmear technique to create this look. Basically, they used the mortar that goes in between the bricks and schmear it across the brick. You can control how much mortar is left on the bricks, and I love how ours turned out. The perfect balance of brick, and mortar.

I couldn’t imagine our kitchen with subway tile. The brick was one of my favorite design choices I made during the build. Brings in a bit of old world charm, which I just LOVE! Especially with our range!
